BACKGROUND
HISTORY OF THE PARISH
For practical
reasons of giving an opportunity to the personnel ministering in
Gambella State, where the climate is very hot, to alternate service in
the highlands, and to ensure an adequate population base, a part of
Ilubabor, a neighbouring region, is added to the territory of the
Gambella Prefecture bringing the total territory to about 50,000
square kilometres. In this part of Ilubabor, the Church is already
present.
Gore was
conquered in the time of Italian invasion and during this time
Consolata Fathers and Sisters built a Catholic Mission in Gore town.
So the missionaries who came with the Invading Force were the first to
introduce Catholic faith in the area. The idea of the Gore people
about the Catholic Church is mainly derived from the activities of the
missionaries years back i.e. during the 1940' s.
As the missionaries started their activity during the time of the
invasion, their reputation by the people in the area is somehow
associated with the invasion and its negative impressions. Then after
the missionaries left the area, there was no any presence of the
Catholic Church in the area for quite some years. However the Old
Catholic Mission physical structures are still there. Beginning from
1980' s there was an intention and interest to start a Catholic
Presence in Gore area but couldn't be practical until the opening of
the Gore parish in 2002.
At present time
the Apostolic Prefecture of Gambella has opened a mission in Gore town
and there is already a Catholic Priest who starts the mission about
two years ago. He is trying to show to the people the true identity of
the Catholic faith. It was not easy even for this Priest( Fr. Aldo),
who is in charge of the mission, to familiarize the catholic Church in
the area. This Priest is trying to make known the Church by running a
first cycle primary school. In 1941 the number of Catholics were above
hundreds but perhaps they became followers of Orthodox Church.
LOCATION
Gore Mission is
located in the High lands of Ilubabor East of Gambella 90 kms away
from Gambella town. Fr. Aldo who based in Gore follows also the Church
in Bure 85 km away from Gore and the New Mission being built in Metu
town 25 minutes drive from Gore town.
