BACKGROUND
HISTORY OF THE PARISH
The Apostolic
Prefecture of Gambella includes most parts of the Illubabor zone of
Oromia region. The parish of Zion of Mary is found in Bedele town. It
was officially inaugurated in the year 2001 appointing Fr.
BerhaneMariam G/ Amaunel as a parish priest by ,Mgr Theo, apostolic
prefect of Jimma Bonga and Mgr Angelo' Moreschi Apostolic prefect of
Gambella in a Eucharistic celebration attended by many of the pastoral
agents of the two prefectures. As it was known Bedele was found in the
prefecture of Jimma –Bonga.
Tsion mariam
catholic church of Bedele communities were very few from the very
beginning. We started to celebrate mass in a rented house. The number
of the faithful is increasing from time to time. It was not as such
simple in the beginning for pastoral activity in Bedele area because
of the influence of the Muslim communities and the wrong mentality of
the people towards the Catholic faith.
However, at this
time there is an improvement of the peoples' understanding of the
Catholic Church presence and there is a need for more evange1isation.
At this time the catechists, the Parish council and we are trying to
establish different associations such as Legion of Mary and altar
boys. We are also teaching catechumens and conducting training for
catechists.
Location
Bedele Catholic
Church is found in the Illubabor Zone of Oromya region. It is located
480km south west of Addis Ababa. There are three missionary stations

activity in Bedele Catholic Church is kindergarten, children
feeding program, water project which is on the process.

INFORMATION

We are trying
to change the mentality of the indigenous people towards the
Catholic Church through dialogue with the people, through working
together with other religious denominations for the benefit of the
people and through advocacy.

Weare trying to
give a good basis of education for Children in the kindergarten by
committed qualified teachers. To sustain the formation of the
children we have a plan to upgrade the kindergarten to a primary
school.

We are
conducting a special training for catechists so that the Catechists
can give a service in the absence of the priest.
