HISTORICAL NOTES
AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Archdiocese of Addis Abeba was established by the Apostolic
Constitution "Quod Venerabilis" on February 20th, 1961, in place
of the Apostolic Exarchate which had been erected on October
31st, 1951, with its first Eparch His Excellency Abune
Haile-Mariam Kahsay.
Extent:
The Archdiocese of Addis Abeba comprises all the Amhara Region;
Metekel Zone in Benishangul-Gumuz Region; zones 1, 3, 4 & 5 in
Affar Region; North Shewa zone and part of Eeast Shewa zone in
Oromiya Region.
Addis Abeba is a Metropolitan See with the suffragan Eparchies
of Asmara, Adigrat, Barentu, Keren and Emdibir.
