Ursuline Sisters of Maria Virgin Immacolata, MVI
The official title of the
congregation is " Ursuline Sisters of V.M.I. of Gandino". The
congregation was born like a new branch of Ursulines (name that draws its
inspiration to the Virgin and Martyr St. Ursula, patroness chosen by St.
Angela for a congreagation she founded in Brescia in 1535). Founded on
3rd December 1818, Gandino by Father Francis Della Madonna (Diocesan
Priest) a man open to the spirit of God and to the concrete social and
everyday situations, that at the beginning of the nineteenth century with
Napoleonic domination, the moral education was low in the society. He
realized that the role of women in that contest was of primary
importance. The newly gathered sister /teachers/ start early in 1818
their responsibility of education preparing community since their
childhood and accompany them to care their human dignity and to promote
their spiritual and professional aspects to be self-reliant so that they
could cooperate actively in the building of a new world, well founded upon
true values.
10th June 1922 the
congregation had its pontifical right. On the request of Mgr. G. Luigi
Grisostomo Marinoni, OFM, Cap, Prefect Apostolic of Eritrea of venerable
memory. They came to Eritrea/Ethiopia on 13th July, 1938 from Italy and
the first religious community was formed of four co-sisters in "Infail
Hospital" Asmara. As the number of religious sisters was increased fast
the Ursulines come to Ethiopia - Dessie in 1967 and in 1970 was created
the Delegation in Asmare for Eritrea/Ethiopia, according to the Central
Administration (Mother House) of the institute, located in Bergamo - Italy
and on 28th January, 2001 is established the new delegation to Ethiopia
located on Bole Road, Addis Abeba.
The Ursulines in "Simplicity
and Self-sacrifice" are working on the spread of God's Kingdom and for
Salvation of good will people in different countries. As their charism
aim they give particular attention to the youth and to promote the woman
as their founder had underlined wherever their work is asked in the Church
in the area of Christian charity in spiritual and social service;-
education, boarding schools, pension for old people, health care. At
present the Ursuline's in Ethiopia are engaged in the following
activities:-

Boarding School, Kindergarten, Cutting and Sewing School, Needy Children
Programme, Pastoral Activities.
1975: Kobbo, North Wollo:
Orphanage - Needy Children Programme, Kindergarten, Pastoral and Social
Assistance.
1978: Bole Road, Addis
Abeba: Delegation House, Formation place for Juniors, Hostel for all the Ursuline Sisters, women Promotion Center - "Sitam Inistitute.
1979: Gighessa, Shashemene:
Clinic for Handicapped Children, Kindergarten, women Promotion Center/Quera,
Home Visiting Assistance, Pastoral Activities.
1984: Shola, Addis Abeba:
Formation House for Novitiate, Health Unit, Kindergarten, Pastoral and
Social Work.
1991: Adigrat: Formation
House for Aspirant, Kindergarten, Elementary School, Home Visiting and
Pastoral Activities.
1994: Robe (Bale):
Discontinued in 2000.

Archdiocese Women's Promotion Center established in 1984 by the Ursuline
Sisters to help need and school drop out ladies in acquiring Hand Craft
Skills to create awareness of trainee potential resource and develop
talent, to promote the important role of women in the family and society,
to enable trainees to be productive citizen by building self confidence
and to initiate better economic gain and be self reliant.
