Society of Jesus In 1553, St. Ignatius of Loyola created the Jesuit Province of Ethiopia, with 15 Jesuits appointed to work in the kingdom. This initiative ended 24 years later in 1577. A second apostolic effort was started in 1603 by Father Pedro Paez and companions, but it too came to an end in 1640. It was only in 1945 that the Society of Jesus came back to Ethiopia. The first group of five Canadian Jesuits came to Addis Ababa in response to the late Emperor Haile Selassie’s appeal for Jesuit educators. Ever since then Jesuits have been involved in education. Until 1973 they had the administration of Entoto Comprehensive Secondary School (Teferi Mekonnen School). In 1950 the Society of Jesus was asked to found and administer the University College, Addis Ababa, Fr. Lucien Matte S.J. being its first rector. A few years later, Fr. Pierre Gouin S.J., member of the Science Faculty, built the University’s Geophysical Observatory and remained its director until 1978. When Haile Selassie I University was founded in 1961, most of the Jesuit administrators left but the lecturers remained at what today is Addis Ababa University. There are two Jesuits teaching at the Capuchin Franciscan Institute of Philosophy and Theology, Addis Ababa; one Jesuit is teaching at the YTM and Berhane Programmes (CMRS), one is teaching at Kidane Meheret School. One Jesuit is working with the University and College students of the Addis Ababa Archdiocese. Another Jesuit works with appropriate technology in Tigray. Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) has been involved in several relief and development projects since 1982. It currently runs several projects with both the displaced and the refugees in Addis Ababa Kaliti town. One Jesuit is chaplain at Woliso St. Luke Hospital and Nursing College. Two Jesuits are involved in on-going formation and retreats work at Galilee Centre, Debre Zeit.
