Sisters of St. Mariana of Jesus Sisters of St. Mariana of Jesus (Marianitas) This community was founded in Ecuador, Latin America, on April 14, 1873, by Mercedes of Jesus Molina. She took as their spiritual model St. Mariana of Jesus, the first canonized saint of Ecuador, a lay person who, living deeply the Ignatian Spirituality, showed deep love towards the poor people. Mercedes started the Institute after a missionary experience in the Ecuadorian forest, close to the Amazon River, among the native "Shuar" tribe. From the beginning the apostolic priorities were: Pastoral work and Homes for orphans, later on schools and health work were added. Charism: "To serve Jesus Christ, who is on His way to Calvary, in so many apostolic works as there are afflicted hearts in the world". Nowadays the sisters are present in 15 countries around the world: Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, U.S.A., Spain, guinea Bissau, Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, the Philippines , Italy and Kenya. The first sisters arrived in Ethiopia in August 1999 to work in the Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte. Starting from July 2008 they opened Formation House in Addis Ababa.
