Sisters Handmaids of the Church

The Sisters Handmaids of the church organization was founded by H.E. Monsignor Armido Gasparini (MCCJ) now Bishop Emeritus of the Vicariate of Awasa. The Community of the SHC is a Pious Union on the way to become a Diocesan Congregation.

The beginning of formation in the Pious Union started in 1988 GC. The first place of the Aspirants House was in Awasa, in the compound of the Vicariate, and was soon transferred to the Parish of Tullo, 9 kms. from Awasa.

On the 8th. of September 1989 GC. The first four Novices started their Noviciate in Tullo. The first Profession took place in Tullo Parish Church on the 7th. September 1991. The second Profession took place in the same Parish on the 11th. June 1994.

The specific aim of the Institute is "to participate in the pastoral mission of the Church through the spiritual and corporal works of Mercy, performing very many different services for the people". (Can. 676, Cr. 12, 4-11).

The SHC give priority to:-

a)  Pastoral work in the Parishes: -Teaching catechism in the schools and catechumenates, preparing and leading pastoral meetings especially for girls, women and youths; preparing children for first Communion, and girls for the Sacrament of Marriage.

b) Social services in the Parishes: - Working in Centers for the promotion of women, for example: home- economics and other activities in view of promoting the dignity and respect for women, the family and children. Caring for the sick and other activities to promote health; teaching in kindergartens and schools.

In all their activities, both pastoral and social, the S.H.C. give special attention to the promotion and development of the women.

In order to perform their mission well and with competence the Sisters Handmaids of the Church, receive professional and technical training, prior to their involvement in pastoral and social activities in the various parishes.

The Institute derives its specific spirituality from Jesus the Saviour (Medhane Alem), from Mary Mother of the Church "the Handmaid of the Lord", and from St. Paul, whose apostolic zeal and love for the Church, the mystical body of Christ, is the special charisma of the Institute. In imitation of Mary, the Handmaid of the Lord, the Sisters are to live in humility and truth.

The Congregation of the Comboni Missionary Sisters has accepted the responsibility of collaborating with the Founder in forming and guiding the Institute until self-reliant. Two Comboni Sisters are working in the various stages of formation: Sr. M. Celinia Cominelli has the overall responsibility of the Pious Union, and Sr. Ruth Bryden is Mistress of Novices. The Founder, H.E. Monsignor Gasparini resides in the Postulancy House in Addis Ababa.

H.E. Bishop Lorenzo Ceresoli, Vicar Apostolic of Awasa, is the Ecclesiastical Authority of the Pious Union.
