Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit, SSpS
An international community of
women, dedicated to the Life-giving SPIRIT, called and sent, in mission
for mission, to make known the saving LOVE of the TRIUNE GOD to all
Peoples. Anchored in the Trinitarian spirituality, nourished by the Word
of God and the Eucharist, guided by the Spirit in discernment, they are
sent as prophetic missionary communities beyond barriers of language,
culture and social classes in order to reveal the feminine face of the
Triune God.
Founded in 1889 in Steyl, the
Netherlands, by St. Arnold Janssen with Blessed Maria, Helena Stollenwerk,
and Mother Josepha, Hendrina Stenmanns. St. Arnold Janssen canonized on
the 5th of October 2003 with the first Divine Word Missionaries St. Joseph
Freinademetz, founded three congregations. Two women congregations and a
male congregation supported lay associations in most of the countries.
The SSpS work hand in hand with the Divine Word Missionaries in five
continents.
From a small group, the
Congregation has now grown to around 3,500 members of 38 nationalities.
Sharing in the same MISSION of
JESUS, they are committed to life-promoting relationships in communities,
especially with the poor and marginalized. Within 44 countries in the
five continents, they serve the Local Church in various ministries, such
as education, health-care, socio-pastoral work and in other relevant
apostolates.
In 1995 they began their
mission in Ethiopia with their first mission at Alem-Tena in the Apostolic
Vicariate of Meki, later on, in the same Vicariate the Alaba mission is
being helped by a sister, taking part of the management of the
kindergarten.
In 1997 the sisters started
working with the Consolata Missionaries in Waragu and Chole Mission.
In 2002, the new mission of
Badessa has started in the Apostolic Vicariate of Soddo Hosanna. A sister
is involved in the social development office at the Vicariate level.
Since May 2003 another sister
was assigned at the Meki Vicariate Secretariat office. The SSpS are
engaged in kindergarten, women's promotion, health care, integrated rural
development, youth animation and pastoral work.
