Medical Mission Sisters, MMS

The Congregation of Medical Mission Sisters  also known as "The Society of Catholic Medical Missionaries", is an international religious community of women who dedicate themselves to a life and mission of healing, following the example of Christ, in areas of need throughout the world.

The Society was founded in 1925 by Mother (Dr.) Anna Dengel to respond to the urgent needs of Muslim women who were dying needlessly in India, deprived of medical care, because male doctors could not attend to them.  The Medical Mission Sisters today continue this healing mission of Christ in 16 countries throughout the world by sharing their gifts and talents to promote health and wholeness for all.

In 1965, Mother Dengel visited Ethiopia in response to a request from the late Archbishop, Mgr. Asrate Mariam, to establish a hospital in Attat, Guraghe.  The first two sisters arrived in 1967 and in April 1969, with the arrival of three more sisters the work began.

In 1980 a Formation House was established in Addis Ababa to welcome young Ethiopian women who wished to join the Society.

The Sisters in Addis Ababa presently are involved in education, peace and justice and social development, pastoral work and society adminstration.

In 1992 a new community involved in a rural health and development project was started near Debre Zeit and handed over this project to the government at the end of 2005.

In  2000, two sisters started working in Wolliso Hospital as General Manager of the Hospital and Tutor/Librarian at the Nursing School.  In 2001 one sister Surgeon also joined the international community in Woliso.
