Good Shepherd Sisters

The international congregation of Good Shepherd Sisters has about 5,000 members whose service worldwide is directed towards women and children who are marginalized in society and thus need special care and guidance because of social or family problems.

St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, foundress of the congregation, missioned her sisters to Africa for the first time in 1843.  But it was 1971 before the first Good Shepherd Sister came to Ethiopia.  A community was established in 1975 in Addis Ababa at the invitation of Abune Asrate Mariam Yemeru and with the support of H.E. Archbishop Raymond Etteldorf, Pro-Nuncio.

The Irish province of the congregation has been responsible for this community since its inception and the Province Coordinator supports and assists the local Coordinators in Ethiopia.  Over the past 25 years, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat, the sisters have established a number of projects and those functioning at present are described below.  The thrust of all these programmes is to enable women to develop their own capacity and potential as active members of their own communities.  Means and methods are adapted to the local needs and circumstances.  While these projects operate independently of each other, they are all conducted according to the basic philosophy of the Good Shepherd Sisters.

1987:  Bethlehem Day Care (BDC) was established
-    Children's Day Care Center for 105 children (3 to 6 yrs) with a
     staff of 11.
-    Sponsorship Programme for children, (7 to 18 yrs)
-    Parent Education providing informal education and supportive services
-    Credit & Saving for women in need

1976:  Good Shepherd Sisters' Centre (GSSC) was established and in 1992: was reorganized.  This centre functions for:
-    Children's Day Care Centre (3-6 years)
-    Children's Sponsorship Programme (4 to 18 years)

In this centre we run programmes for women at risk, orphans in the community, persons with handicaps, the elderly, community development through environmental upgrading.

1995: Community Development Project Gulele(CDPG) was established
-    Women's Promotion  (Credit and Saving)
-    Day-Care Facilities
-    Programme to enable poor children to stay in school, and to help
unschooled children to catch up with their peers.
-    Literacy programme
-    Other interventions at the request of the community.

1996: Shone/Mazoria: was established in the Apostolic Vicariate of
          Soddo-Hosanna
-    Programmes for women, children, youth, credit, loan groups
-    Literacy, non -formal education, seminars and workshop
-    Day Care facility for malnourished pre-school children
-    Assistance for physically disabled students to attend school and have
     board and lodging facilities.
