Good Shepherd Sisters

The international congregation of Good Shepherd Sisters has about 4,500 members whose service worldwide is directed towards women and children who are marginalized in society and thus need special care and guidance because of social or family problems.

St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, foundress of the congregation, missioned her sisters to Africa for the first time in 1843.  But it was 1971 before the first Good Shepherd Sister came to Ethiopia.  A community was established in 1975 in Addis Ababa at the invitation of Abune Asrate Mariam Yemeru and with the support of H.E. Archbishop Raymond Etteldorf, Pro-Nuncio.

The Irish province of the congregation has been responsible for this community since its inception and the Province Coordinator supports and assists the local Coordinators in Ethiopia.  Over the past 35 years, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Catholic Secretariat, the sisters have established a number of projects and those functioning at present are described below.  The thrust of all these programmes is to enable women to develop their own capacity and potential as active members of their own communities.  Means and methods are adapted to the local needs and circumstances.  While these projects operate independently of each other, they are all conducted according to the basic philosophy of the Good Shepherd Sisters: "A Person is of more value than a world!".

1976: Good Shephered Sisters Center (GSSC) was established and in 1992 was recognised. In 2005 Woman's Empowerment Project was signed. The project component are as follows:
