Franciscan Sisters of the Heart of Jesus, FCJ
The first group of Franciscan
Sisters of the Heart of Jesus arrived in Ethiopia in 1927, and they
established their first apostolate in Sofi, Gursum, Dire Dawa and Jijiga.
The missions of Gursum, Dire Dawa and Jijiga were relinquished during the
conflict of 1936. All the sisters moved to Harar, where Bethlehem school
and St. Joseph's Boarding Home were opened in the year 1943. The Sisters
came to the capital, Addis Ababa in 1957, and established Kidane Meheret
School and Convent. The mission in Jijiga was reopened in 1971 and
remained until 1977.
In 1982, the Sisters were sent
to Debre Zeit, where they are now giving their services at Guardian
Angels' school. The Sisters also engaged in social and welfare activities
and in the formation of young girls who aspire to become religious in this
Congregation.
On September 8th 1996, Kidane Meheret Children's Home was given to our
Congregation after Sr. Joseph Tessema, who used to look after the
children, passed away at the age of 96. Currently the Sisters are
involved in Education and 2,600 students are benefiting from their
schools. They also serve in the Parish in Pastoral activities.
