Franciscan Sisters of St. Mary of the Angels, FSMA

The Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Mary of the Angels was founded in Angers, France, in 1871 and its specific charism is Eucharist-Mission. The Sisters dedicate themselves to the service of the poor, education, pastoral work, care of the sick, according to the actual needs of the Church and the world.

1954: F.S.M.A. Sisters went to India in 1892 and it was from there that a group of four Sisters (French) came to Ethiopia in 1954 to take charge of Notre Dame School in Dire Dawa.

1956: The Sisters accepted the responsibility of Nativity Girls' School in Addis Ababa.

1972: The SMA Social Centre at Asebe Teferi (Harrarghe) was started with a Clinic, Kindergarten classes for children of the vicinity and care of the leprosy patients.

1993: At the request of Abune Yohannes of Meki Vicariate, FSMA sisters took over the administration of the School for the Blind in Shashemane.

1994: Formation programme for young Ethiopian girls re-started. This programme formerly begun in l974 had been discontinued from l984.

2001: In answer to the repeated requests from Abune Lorenzo Ceresoli of the Awasa Vicariate, the Sisters took over the Elementary and Junior Secondary section of the school which was under the direction of the Comboni Fathers.
