Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady, FMOL
The Franciscan Missionaries of
Our Lady were in Ethiopia as early as the year 1910. They were known as
Soeurs Franciscaines de Calais from the name of the town where the
Congregation began in the north of France. Later on the Mother House was
moved to Deserves and the former name was changed to the present one.
When they first came to
Ethiopia they settled in Harar town where they helped Abuna Andreas
Jarosseau to start the Congregation of the Soeurs Oblates de Marie
Immaculate. From there they opened several convents in the Province of
Harar. They also had two convents in Addis Ababa, one near Cathedral and
one near Kebena, three houses in Gurage and one in Arsi.
They returned to Ethiopia in
1957 at the invitation of Monsignor Person. At present they have
Novitiate in Nazareth and one community. The other communities are two in
Wolaita, one in Emdibir, one in Wonji, one in Midagdu, one in Metahara,
one in Mectha and one in Debre Zeit and one in Addis Ababa which is the
Regional House. We also work on pastoral, education and health activities
jointly with different vicariates.
