Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, FMM
In 1936 a
group of Franciscan Missionaries of Mary came to Ethiopia for the first
time at the invitation of the Italian Government. They provided medical
care for people with Hansens' Disease in Zeleklaka and in the Army
Hospital in Addis Ababa. The Sisters left Ethiopia in 1942. During the
short time of their stay one sister was called to her eternal reward and
is buried in Gulele Cemetery.
In November 1982 the Institute
returned to Ethiopia, providing three nurses and one medical doctor for a
JRS Mobile Medical Team. This team worked on a three-year agreement with
the RRC serving displaced people and the Guji people in Borana and
southern Sidamo. In 1984-85, during the famine, the same team worked in
Wolaita.
Ethiopia is part of the East Africa Province and the Provincialate is in
Nairobi where the present Provincial is Sr. Mary Anne Williamson.

In Gosa:
In 1985, at the request of Mgr. Gasparini, then Bishop of Awassa Vicariate,
this first community was officially opened. Today the Sisters work in the
Clinic, WID Project, Polio Rehabilitation, Kindergarten, Library, School,
Youth Work and Parish.
In Bushullo:
In July 1987 a second community was opened near Awassa. The Sisters
conduct the Bushullo Major Health Centre for the Awassa Vicariate. The
Centre has a 70 bed in-patient unit and full OPD. Out-reach programmes
consist of Nutrition unit, MCH and Vaccination programmes, Twins'
Programme.
In Addis Ababa:
In May 1994 a third community was constituted in Addis Ababa. This is
intended as a formation Community and acts as the center and logistical
support for the rural communities. The Sisters work in Education in Catholic
Schools of Addis Ababa:in prison ministry; in CMRS formation programme; in
ECUSTA; in a HIV/AIDS education programmefor school going youth.
