Daughters of St. Anne

The congregation of the Daughters of St. Anne, was founded by Mother Rosa Gattorno in 1886, Piacenza in Italy. She was born in Genova on October 14, 1831, and grew up, in all serenity, in a Catholic family.

Mother Rosa Gattorno has been a fiancée, a spouse and a mother of three children. This variety of experiences has enriched the personality of the foundress with an extraordinary sense of humanity. With her sisters rather than a superior she has always been a mother. Mother Rosa Gattorno died on 6th May 1900 in Rome and is declared "Blessed" by His Holiness John Paul II on 9th April 2000.

The Charism of the Daughters of St. Anne is to strive for holiness following in the footsteps of Christ in the mystery of His Poverty (within the church) serve their brothers and sisters with maternal dedication, living familiar life under the guidance of St. Anne.

The sisters first came to Ethiopia in 1968, and the first house was in Addis Ababa.

1968: Addis Ababa: Provincial house, formation, kindergarten, cutting and sewing classes, social assistance to the poor and needy, catechesis in the parish.

1976: Boditti: At the invitation of Monsignor Marinozzi the Daughters of St. Anne came to the Vicariate of Soddo-Hosanna. Social assistance to the poor and needy, pastoral, womens' promotion, kindergarten, formation house for aspirants.

1982: Guder: Vicariate of Nekemte: In this year the Daughters of St. Anne took over the orphanage previously ran by the Comboni Sisters. Elementary school, pastoral assistance to youth, junior school, kindergarten and assistance to the poor and needy.

1983: Ambo: Hostel for Guder orphans attending secondary school in Ambo. Home visiting, social assistance to the poor and need, kindergarten, women promotion.

1985: Moconissa: Originally served from Boditti, since 1985 a permanent community gives service in the Church, kindergarten, pastoral work, social assistance to the poor and needy, formation house for aspirants.

1985: Asella: Prefecture Apostolic of Meki: In response to a long - standing invitation of Consolata Fathers, the Daughters of St. Anne care for orphans, teach etches in the school clinic, pastoral work, formation house for aspirants and social assistance to the poor and needy.

1991: Meki: Engaged in the formation of the Diocesan Sisterhood.

1995: Edagahamus (Adigrat): Handed over from the Little Sisters of the Assumption, the sisters are working in the clinic, home visiting and formation house for aspirants.

1996: Arbaba (Gonder): Invited by the Cistercian Fathers. Teaching ethics in the school, women promotion, and social assistance to the poor and needy, home visiting and pastoral work.
