Daughters of Mary Immaculate, DMI

Within the Vicariate of Meki (Ethiopia) on 8 December 1985 Abune Yohannes W/Giorgis the local ordinary, founded the Religious Institute of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, after an adequate period of experience as a public lay association called "Maids of Mary Help of Christians".

Abune Yohannes W/Giorgis moved by the Holy Spirit responded to the call of God to found this Institute gathering young girls around him sharing in the church and with the church, in the "salvific" work of Christ for the salvation of the humanity in particular way the oppressed woman.

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate by serving the brothers and the sisters, with an ever-increasing effort to imitate that attitude of poverty and service which Mary expressed in the "magnificat".

The Spirit:  The proper spirit of the daughters of Mary Immaculate is connected to our state of consecrated person, who find in the virgin Mary our efficient model, example to be followed.  Mary Immaculate our patron "The Handmaid of the Lord" always ready to fulfil His word and to serve the most needy LK. 1:38-39.

Aim:  The general aim of the Institute is the glory of God and the sanctification of the sisters.

The specific aim is the integral promotion of woman, to raise them from their condition of social inferiority, spiritual ignorance, cultural and structural oppressions, to the dignity of the daughters of God.

Activities:  The proper activities of the Institute are those that directly contribute to the promotion of woman.

We work:  in the school for women in development.

In Polio project with most needy children, we visit families at home especially sick people, we teach in the kindergarten.

We work with the youth to form good and Christian families.  We teach catechism in parish specially in the villages we take care of the parish preparing liturgy during advent, lent, may the month giving to Mary and "Tsome Filseta" in honor of the virgin Mary our patron.

Three sisters have been involved in the formation of the first groups of the daughters of Mary Immaculate.

Sister Lucia Zeru, Comboni Sister, Sr. Mary Joe, Irish Missionary Sister of the Holy Rosary, and since 1991 Sr. Carmela Tedla, Daughter of St. Anne.  At the present there are nine sisters, 2 postulants and 23 aspirants.

Currently the Addis Ababa community takes care of street children by gathering some groups of idle girls and boys in the compound of the convent.  We organize educational games and teach them moral and ethics for their human growth and integration in the society.
