Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Salesian Sisters

The official title of the Congregation is Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, in Italian:  Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice, from which the official initials F.M.A. derive and apply to all the Salesian Sisters working throughout the world.

The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians are present in 85 countries on all continents, with their active concern for the young through educational activities formal and informal, in schools at all levels, youth centres, health care, community and social services in mission areas, residences for students and working girls.

Three Salesian sisters arrived in Ethiopia on February 16, 1984 to give their services at the Apostolic Nunciature in Addis Ababa, with a fourth Sister joining them on October 3, 1988.  They served the Church at this level until 1997.

On February 1, 1986 another small community took over the work at the Catholic Mission in Dilla (Sidamo) with kindergarten. Promotional activities for girls and young women, dispensary and community health care, youth center with various promotional, educational, religious and recreational activities.  The promotional activities evolved into a Vocational Training Center which is now a Technical School.  A Secretarial Computer course was added which has now reached the level of College.  One more Kindergarten was opened in the city of Dilla, and a Literacy programme in the Mission compound.

In 1987, the new Mission in Zway (Shewa) was opened with kindergarten, women's promotion, Christian formation, youth center with promotional, Christian formation recreational and other activities.  Later on, the Women Promotion center was upgraded to Vocational School, which is now a Technical School. A secretarialComputer course was added which has now reached the level of college. One more Kindergarten was opened in the city of Dilla, and a litrecy programme in the mission compound.

In 1987, the new mission in Zeway (East Shewa) was opened with Kindrgarten, Women's Promotion Center, with promotional, recreational and formation activities. Later the Women Promotion was upgraded to Technical School. Now the Mary Help College runs the Diuploma Programme in Information Technology and Fashion designer, besides a Teacher Training (in Amharic and in Afan Oromo).

The Litrecy Programme is recognised as Adult Education, allowing young people to join the scond cycle of formal education (5th grade). Lately a new Kindergarten and the Primary School (grade 1-8) have been added in the town.

A come and see programme is open to all young girls who want to stay with us and experience our life donated to God for the young people.

On July 30, 1990, the first house in Addis Ababa was opened for the formation of young candidates for our religious institute.  The community opened up its facilities to the needy girls and young women of the area who attend in large number the various promotional and educational activities throughout the week.    In 1994 a Vocational School was opened for the professional preparation of girls towards some form of employment.  Later on a literacy programme was added and in the year 2002 a secretarial course became also part of the Mary Mazzarello Vocational Training Centre.

In 1994 the Congregation established in Adwa (Tigray) and in l996 a Women's Promotion Centre and Nursery School for children of young mothers began.  A Youth Centre was open to the youth of the town with religious, social and recreational activities.  The women promotion activities were changed to vocational training centre, which has now developed into a technical school.  A course in computer was also started for students and for working people; a primary school was open in 1998 and is now at the 6th level.
