Daughters of Charity Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul, DC 1927: The Daughters of Charity first arrived in St. Mary's Addis Ababa. The community took root and spread and there are now 63 Sisters from four different countries in Ethiopian Province. The Congregation of Daughters of Charity was founded in 1633, by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac in France: The Congregation now serves the poor in 93 countries. 1927: Addis Ababa - opening of St. Mary's School. Present Mission: St. Mary's School, P-9, St. Mary's School, 10+2. Kindegarten for mentally retarded children, Atse Tekle Ghiorgis School, Kechene K-8: Kechene Urban Development Project, Provincial House and Formation House. 1959: Bonga: Bethlehem House, Kaffa - Closed by authorities in 1978 and Reopened 1988 - Kindergarten, WID, Pastoral work, Nutritional service for mal-nourished children, Formation house for Pre-Postulants. 1964: Dembidollo: St.Joseph's House, Wellega - Clinics in town and surrounding villages, Pastoral work, WID and Kindegarten in Samaro. 1973: Mekele: St. Vincent's Tigray - Clinics, Hostel for student, Social work and Rehabilitation programme, Programme for Youth and Street children. 1974: Alitena: St, Justine de Jacobis House, Tigray - Clinic, Relief and Social work, Hostel for students, WID and Kindergarten. 1983: Addis Ababa: Tsion House, - House for Vistors and Sisters involved in other missions, Residence for Sisters working in Provincial Office, CMRS, Atse School, St. Mary's School, Visiting the poor, and Formation. 1984: Wolaita Soddo: Odile House, - Montessori Kindergarten Teacher Training Institute, Kindergartens, WID, Home visiting, Pastoral and Youth work. 1985: Mekele: St. Louise's - Clinics: General, Trachoma, Polio, WID, Kindergartens, Social work. 1986: Monoxeito: Gebre Michael House - Clinic, Kindergarten, and Youth (Temporarily transferred to Eritrean Province in 2000). 1991: Addis Ababa: Seton House - Opened as Regional House. Now Fromation house for Postulants, Residence for Sisters working in Provincial House, Atse Tekele Ghiorgis School and CMRS. 1992: Opening of Urban Development Programme (DOC/UDP) Kechene. Community based programmes for health, agriculture, housing, care of the elderly, nutritional rehabilitation, youth programme, non-formal education, WID, physically and handicapped, and income-generating activities. 1993: Alecu: Gabriel House, Wellega - Clinic (opened many years ago and stayed Annex to St. Joseph's house, Danka), Kindergarten, WID and Youth programmes. 1995: Jimma: St. Catherine;s House - Annex to Bethlehem House, Bonga and established as a legitimately constituted house in 2000: Community based rehabilitation programme for Leprosy Patients, Programme for the Handicapped Children and Kindergarten. 1995: Election of the Vice-Province of the Daughters of Charity in Ethiopia. Administration and residence in St. Mary's Compound, Addis Ababa. 1996: Addis Ababa: St. Joseph's Seminary - New novitiate building in St. Mary's compound- Seminary sisters (novices), some sisters involved in Atse and St. Mary's School and Studying. 1998: Bahir Dar: Blessed Gebremichael House - Elementary school, WID and Social work. (Temporarily transferred to Ethiopian Province 2000). 2001: Erection of the Province of the Daughters of Charity in Ethiopia.
