Blessed Joseph Allamano,
Founder of the Consolata Fathers and Sisters, earnestly wished to send
Missionaries to Ethiopia, especially to the Oromo area. To that purpose
he asked permission from Propaganda Fide.
The reason of such a preference
was due to the desire to continue the apostolic work of the great Capuchin
Missionary Cardinal Massaia, whom Blessed Joseph Allamano admired very
much.
Only in 1913 was that desire
fulfilled, when the Consolata Fathers were entrusted with part of the
so-called "Vicariate of Galla", as "Prefecture Apostolic of South Kaffa".
The same year, after its borders had been greatly modified, it was renamed
"Kaffa Prefecture" (8 September 1913).
The First Prefect Apostolic,
Monsignor Gaudenzio Barlassina, appointed on 6 May 1913, arrived in Addis
Ababa towards the end of 1916. He had to wait about a year before
entering into the territory entrusted to him. He was Prefect Apostolic
from 1913 to 1933.
Monsignor Luigi Santa was
Prefect Apostolic and later Vicar Apostolic from 1933-1942.
In 1941, with the end of the
Italian colonization in Ethiopia, the Consolata Missionaries were also
among those expelled from the country.
In 1970, the Consolata Fathers
humbly came back to Ethiopia, taking over the spiritual care of some
missions in the Harar Vicariate.
In 1980 the new Prefecture of
Meki was entrusted to them. Fr. Giovanni Bonzanino was Administrator
Apostolic from 1980 to 1981. Then Monsignor Yohannes Woldeghiorghis took
over as Prefect Apostolic.

At present they minister in Addis Ababa Archdiocese, Apostolic Vicariate
of Meki and in the Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte.
