The international Congregation of
the Comboni Missionary Sisters, CMS was founded
by Bishop Daniel Comboni (St.
Daniel Comboni since 2003)
in Italy in 1872. The
congregation was born of the prophetic intuition of Daniel Comboni who saw
the need to integrate the presence of the woman in the apostolate of
Africa. Today the congregation fulfils the charism of its founder in the
church by dedicating itself principally to evangelization among those
people who have not yet received the message of the Gospel particularly
among the poorest and most abandoned especially in Africa. A priority of
the congregation is promoting the integral growth and development of the
woman at every level so that they can develop their own capacity and
potentials as active members in the society.
The Comboni Missionary Sisters
worked in Eritrea since 1914. In 1965 they extended their mission to
Ethiopia in 1965. The first initiated their presence in Awasa - Sidamo.
Then a second community was opened in Addis Ababa at the Apostolic
Nunciature in 1969. In the years 1970 - 1974, other communities were
opened in Meki, Nekemte, Guder, Sabata, Gura, Megenasse with six others in
Sidamo.
In 1977 the established
communities formed a delegation which became a province in 1982. A
formation house was opened in Addis Ababa (Emmaus House) in 1980 to meet
the need of the young Ethiopian women gifted with the Comboni Charism.
Currently, there are 41 Comboni Sisters
of 11 nationalities working in Ethiopia. They are present in three Ecclesiastical
Jurisdictions: the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa (3 communities), the Apostolic Vicariate of Awassa
(4 communities), and the Apostolic Vicariate of Nekemte (1 community).
The sisters operate in in the pastoral and social fields: education and
promotion of women, education and promotion of youth in primary and
secondary schools, in the medical field (6 clinics) and the formation of
local religious. Two sisters are working in the formation of the "Pious
Union" Handmaids of the Church for the Vicariate of Awasa.
