The congregation of
“Capuchin Sisters of Mother Rubatto” was founded by Mother Francisca
Rubatto, helped by a Capuchin friar, Fr. Angelico Martini, in Loano
(Italy) on 23 January 1885. Mother Francisca was born into a Catholic
family in Carmagnola (Italy), on 14th February 1844. There was a spirit
of love and deep faith within the family. As a young girl she dedicated
all her time to love and help the poor people. She worked in the big city
of Torino with Cottolengo and Don Bosco until she responded with great
faith and commitment to the call of God to become the mother of many
sisters in this Franciscan Capuchin family.
She died on 6th August 1904 in Uruguay (S. America) and was
declared “BLESSED” by His Holiness John Paul II, in Rome, on 10th October
1993. The congregation of Capuchin Sisters of Mother Francesca Rubatto
came from Genoa, Italy to Segeneiti, Eritrea on August 22, 1964 at the
request of Mgr. Albino Zenone Testa at that time Vicar Apostolic of
Asmara. After a few years the same sisters came to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
in 1973. At the present time, many of the Eritrean sisters have left for
their country.
