The first Capuchin to set foot
on Ethiopian land were the blessed Martyrs Agathange of Vendome and
Cassien of Nantes killed in Gonder on 7th August, 1638. Since
then Ethiopia became a forbidden land for catholic missionaries and we had
to wait for two centuries before finding another capuchin in the country,
Guglielmo Cardinal Massaja, great bishop and missionary from 1846 up to
1880. He was the first Apostolic Vicar of the Oromos in the Southern part
of Ethiopia and was followed by other Capuchins, most of them from France,
who helped him in his difficult task and continued after him to carry his
great missionary work.
In Northern Ethiopia the Prefecture Apostolic of Eritrea was established
in 1894 with territory detached from the Apostolic of Vicariate Abyssinia.
The fast growing number of the Ethiopian Capuchins and the political
division of Eritrea from Ethiopia brought about the establishment of the
Eritrean Capuchin Province and the General Vice Province of Ethiopia on 7th
January 1993. At present in Ethiopia there are 87 Capuchin friars working
in four ecclesiastical Circumscriptions: the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa,
the Apostolic Vicariate of Harar, the Apostolic Vicariate of Soddo-Hosanna
and Eparchy of Emdibir.
71 friars are Ethiopians and 16 are Expatriates from Italy, France, India
and Eritrea. The Capuchin Friars of the General Vice Province of Mary Kidane Meheret in Ethiopia are engaged in Evangelisation, Pastoral works,
Schools, Feeding Centres and other social activities in favour of the
poorest and needy people according to the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.
