Founded in France in 1680 by
St. John Baptist de la Salle, Patron Saint of Teachers.
1938: Brothers from the District of Rome came to
Asmara to open a
boarding school and to Addis Abeba to staff the new
seminary. In 1949, St. Joseph School, Keren, was founded and in
1951
Collegio La Salle, Asmara.
1953: The first French
Brothers arrived in Dire Dawa to open Besrate Gabriel
School. They also began Nativity Boys'
School in Addis Abeba in 1955. In 1959, St. Joseph's School, Addis
Abeba, was established and American Brothers arrived as staff.
1971: Blessed
Ghebremichael Centre (GMC) was opened in Addis Abeba.
1981: The Delegation of Ethiopia was formed.
1982: Collegio La Salle, Asmara, was nationalized.
1982: Nativity School, Shinnara, was established.
1984: The Brothers assumed responsibility for St. Joseph's School,
Nazareth.
1987: The Brothers assumed the responsibility for St. Joseph's School,
Meki.
1989: The Brothers opened a Novitiate in Nairobi, Kenya.
1990: A Postulancy Programme was opened at GMC, Addis Abeba.
1991: The
Brothers opened an Scholasticate Programme in Nairobi,
Kenya.
1996: The Ethiopian/Eritrean Delegation voted to become a member of the
newly established Anglophone African Lwanga
Province,
also consisting
of Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.
1997: The Brothers assumed responsibility for La
Salle Technical School,
Hagaz
1998: Ethiopia
and Eritrea became separate Sectors within the Lawanga
Province.
2000: The
Brothers assumed responsibility for St. Michael's School,
Sagheneiti.
