Bethania Community Bethania Community was founded on September 28, 1992 by Sister Senkenesh Gebre-Mariam with Sister Regat Tesfamariam, as a religious family of diocesan right in the Archdiocese of Addis Abeba, with the approval of His Eminence Cardinal Paulos Tzadua, and later on by His Grace Archbishop Berhaneyesus Souraphiel, Metropolitan Archbishop of Addis Abeba. In taking up the name "Bethania Community", we long to realise the two aspects of our consecrated life: contemplation (Mary) and diligent service (Martha). By this we profess to be contemplatives in action, leading a religious life in the midst of the poor. Spirituality: We have chosen the spirituality of St. Ignatius as it is most suited to articulate our choice to be contemplatives in action. Elements of Ethiopian spirituality are also incorporated.
Part of our pastoral
commitment
is
participation in retreats and missions for the lay faithful. Following
the rhythm of the Ethiopian liturgical year, the season of Lent and that
of "Filseta" are occasions where by the lay faithful go to meet the monks
and experience monastic
fervour
and renewal. We integrate this tradition, with that of Ignatian
spirituality to build one another in love.
